My Freshman Year (p.1-40) Reading "My Freshman Year" I definitely saw many similarities between Rebekah's hallmates and myself. I also saw similarities between them and people I know as well. Many of my friends and I did join clubs based on our major. I for one joined as many clubs as I could that delt with volunteer work and helping children. I also, was one of the student who has changed their major from one thing to another. This book has definately made me think back to last year and reflect on my own freshman year in college. I also observed as Rebekah observed that more college students are waking up earlier for class and do not spend a ton of time with their friends. In many cases I saw people sat down with their friends while scheduleing and scheduled same classes or classes in the same time slots as the others so they do have time to see eachother. I can't wait to read on and hear about the rest of her freshman year and to see if any of our research ends up being similar.
Ethnography (p.1-25) As I was reading this book I became completly confused. I had to read many sections of this book five or six times. As I was reading I understood the connection they made from juggling to being an ethnogrpaher. However, that was basically as much as I understood.
My Freshman Year (p.41-66) This portion of "My Freshman Year" I found very interesting. I found some similarities with Bloomsburg and AnyU and some differences. For example, in AnyU all the freshman have a manditory book that has to be read and they discuss it in a seminar class with about twenty other students. As a freshman here in Bloomsburg you also are required to read a book and discuss it. The only difference is that it isn't in a seminar class it is in your OWL groups during orientation. Another similarity is that many do not join Greek life. Eventhough some students in Bloomsburg do join Greek Life a majority of us do not. As I was talking to some of the students in my hall last year about rushing they said similar things that Judy from "My Freshman Year" said. One of the things that were similar was that they didn't want to conform and that they wanted to stand out. The main difference that I see in Bloomsburg that Rebekah saw in AnyU is the use of the lounges in the dorms. For instance, I am in one of the lounges in my dorm doing homework. Also, throughout the year we have events and get togethers in them. Also, when it comes to hall meetings my whole floor usually shows up, unlike her floor in AnyU. Another difference I noticed is that during the Super Bowl they had the game on in the lounge and no one showed. Last year during the Super Bowl we suggested to our CA about watching it in the lounge and we all did.
Enthrography (p.27-47) While reading this part of Enthrography I began to understand why we were reading it. This portion of the book made very good points of amny things that I have never really thought about. One for example is that I never realized that I "study something because I already know something". As I began to think about it this is true in many ways. As a student my teachers sometimes made us do a KWL chart before we satrted a new topic. By doing this they want to see how much we already know before we offically start it. Also I realized by reading this book has helped me in the CLUE project. I now can analyze thing about people and places which I wouldn't have been able to do before.
My Freshman Year (p.67-89) While reading "My Freshman Year" I began to get frustrated and mad about what was written. When the International Students said that we are basically to patriotic I became furrious. How can some one have to much patritism? Isn't being aptriotic a good thing? Also, when the one International Studetn said that all we do is ask about Ninjas got me angry. Who actually says things like that? I cannot think of one person that would ever say that! I feel like just because one person said or did it to them they thought that all Americans are the same way which we are not. I for one would never go up to some one from Ireland and ask them if they were an alcoholic. I feel like that what they did towards Americans is just as wrong and rude as to what some people did to them. There is no right that grants anyone to judge or make fun of anyone else based on there ethnicity. This part of My Freshman Year has made me really infuriated. I still enjoy reading it though. I cannot wait to see what the next chapter entails.
